  • There are many speculations and hidden talks going on during the administration of UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The, then President Ronald Reagan along with the Minister had made accusations against Mandela and his African National Congress for being communist and terrorist during the 1980s.

Why Nelson Mandela was on the U.S Terror List until 2008

The main comment came by Prime Minister Margaret after she had a brief talk with Mandela in July 1990, just 5-months after he was released from the jail.

Both the Thatcher and President Reagan added Mandela and his ANC into the terror watch list! The main reason for doing so was that both the U.S and the UK leaders considered South Africa’s apartheid system as a Cold War ally, while the ANC as the main bending thing spreading all the communism.

In the year 1986, Reagan gave a speech mentioning that the South African government won’t allow organization within the country who claims to develop a communist state. Later both Thatcher and Reagan even denied a movement by the SA government lead by Mandela as it could put pressure on the country to move the apartheid system.

While the succeeding leaders of U.S and UK were in favor of Nelson Mandela. Still, the U.S continued to claim Mandela and his team in the terror list, till 2008! Later in July, President George W. Bush passed a bill to remove all the leaders from the terror list. Even the Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice also mentioned about Mandela as of the greatest leader of South Africa!
